    Tom Gilbert's Coming Out Party?

I've been keeping tabs on him for a few years, and this year I have annoyed at least one poster with my constant 'watch for this kid, he's a player' viewpoint (I'm looking at you, DDS )

    Last night:

    0G 2A, -1, 28+ Mins, 5 BS

No, he's not the next Bobby Orr, but he is quickly becoming a high-end defensive prospect. Positionally sound, makes good decisions, and can really move the puck. He's not small, either.

Is he the D-man we need to fill the current void? No. Is he part of what could be strong foundation on the back end? IMO, You betcha.

I thought Gilbert had a good night, but he'll have to prove himself again and again. Bisaillon had a good game too the other night...I'm not sold on either of them yet though

Yeah but really you aren't sold on anyone unless they are an overpaid vetran.

              He's a got a bright future.

Shame is, I wouldn't be surrpised if he's dealt in the Summer - by my eye, we have to get rid of two of Grebeshkov, Smid, Greene and Gilbert... Greene and Gilbert seem like the easiest to move of those 4 for several reasons.

That said, I've been impressed with him since he came up as well. Solid player, (high event player too, was on for 6 goals last night ) and it'll be really nice to watch him once he can iron out the mistakes of his game (ie: Radulov goal where he was staring at the puck).

Being we got him for Tommy Salo though, I'd say he's already covered the bet.

Good offensive vision, good passer, nice offensive instincts. Seems slow, not up to nhl speed yet. Pretty suspect defensively in his own end and trying to get back on the rush. As Bill Parcells said about Tony romo, don't get out the annointing oil just yet. He certainly has alot more offensive 'upside' than most of our other D-men but we'll see if he can play defense once he plays 20 games in a row or so.

Ummm tell me why we need to get rid of these guys again? Are you watching last years games because last time I checked our defence pretty much sucked for this entire year.
Shaggy won't be back, Staios and Smith only have a few years left in the tank and if you traded Smith, I wouldn't cry all that much.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

                        Smid, are you bonkers?

And I must add, look at the impact Hemper has made in the two games he has played. In each we have had three or more goals, and in each he scored the first goal of he game for the Oilers, and the first goal of the game for each team last night.

I don't think we need to move any of those guys, since we now have our own AHL team.

The AHL isn't good enough for any of them at this point.

We have 4 guys who need NHL time. Unless Grebeshkov is absolutely amazing, which looks to be possible but nothing I would sell the farm on, we still need to get rid of 1 of Smid/Greene/Gilbert.

Well, unless we're okay with missing the playoffs. Then it doesn't matter.

                            30 PHILADELPHIA (4)

Outside of a couple teams (Nashville, San Jose - take a look at their goaltending and forwards, not to mention who those D are), there's a pretty strong correlation there between having a lot of young D and having poor results. It shouldn't be all that surprising, being most young D can't contribute a net positive over the course of a season.

So why do we have to trade some of ours off? Because we have too many if we want this team to be any kind of successful next season. Smid should still be on the bottom pairing next year, Greene has had an absolutely atrocious season by any metric you want to use, Gilbert looks good, but shouldn't be anywhere but the bottom pairing as well next season and Grebeshkov is a complete wild card. Not to mention that trading some of them off should give us some decent value, not that young defensemen carry a lot of value these days anyway (see: Gorges and a 1st for Rivet) with the new CBA.

If you have to deal 1, deal Greene.
