Are the Oilers players doing the fans a favor?

Ok I am going way out there trying to find positives but maybe the Oilers players are actually doing the team and the fans a favor.
Maybe the players are tanking just enough games so the Oilers will barely miss the playoffs and force the organization to fire Mac T.
If the Oilers don't make the playoffs again, no matter how buddy buddy Mac T is with all the brass, he will either have to quit or they have to fire him.
If the Oilers do make the playoffs, (don't get me wrong, as a fan I want them too.)I have a fear that they will come out and talk about how close they were and they just need to tweak again and then the cycle continues. If you think about it, if the Oilers make the playoffs, unless Mac T is tired of the criticism, he won't quit. Why would he? No matter what moronic move he makes or statement he does, his bosses back him.

I was at the game on saturday and for the first half of the 1st period the Oilers dominated. I can't remember when I have seen the Oilers look that good. I figured they were going to cruise to a 4 or 5-1 win. Nilson scores a goal, Hemsky goes in a breakway, Penner actually hit a few people and looked to be skating. Then BOOM, everything stops and they float around for the remainder of the game until the last few minutes. It blows my mind.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

MacT will be the coach next year no matter what happens.

Don't say that. Keep the faith. Katz is a competitive guy, he can't be happy with the way the team is.

I can't imagine that the Oiler players are deliberately conspiring to miss the playoffs. I can imagine that they just don't feel enough inspiration to give it that extra bit of your soul that this time of year requires.

This outcome will have a significant impact on how I spend my winter next year...

I would be absolutely floored if MacT wasn't kicked upstairs and/or pulled away on his own at the end of this season.

I'd be more shocked if he was fired, especially given the way Lowe was dealt with... but that's not a bad thing.

Honestly, as much as there's a lot of crowing here for change... we could very quickly regret this if we have someone like Bucky sliding in behind the spot.

I'm content with the Tom Renney rumours, though the handling of Jagr if he came along as well would be extremely frustrating...

How much of this do you think is related to the Oilers, a very young team, having all kinds of expectations heaped on them?

It's a pretty similar roster to the one that went on a roll last year; of course that didn't happen until Horcoff went down and all expectations for the season were flushed. Heck, Atlanta is on fire right now and the Hawks are struggling...

It's also why it's absolutely paramount for all the young guys on the team to be in the playoffs this year. Yes, we'll be first round fodder (and unlike '06, where that was a good team that had ECHL goaltending for 3 years, we'd be a REAL Cinderella if we went anywhere), but it'd be a disaster to be heading into next year with 89, 13, 12, 77, 37, 5, 19, 46, 78, 51, 49 to all be getting their first crack at it....

I agree but I just don't get it. They came out like gang busters for the first 10 mins then played the remainder of the game like they witnessed their dog being shot in the parking lot. It was 1-0 with only 10 mins gone so I can't see them thinking they can sit on the lead. The last 10 mins of the first period was completely different from the first 10 so I can't say it was because the coaches didn't adjust.

Quite a bit. Last year they started to believe in themselves near the end, and belief goes a long way to creating the reality. This year they just don't seem to believe that they're anything much, and so they're not. I'm guessing that this has everything to do with them being a young team; they don't have the experience/maturity to recognize what they're capable of.

hm.. I disagree. I don't think they really started to "believe" in themselves last year; I just think they A) took a bit of offense to everyone saying they were done and B) were playing with absolutely NO expectations, so they were very loose.

If they players were trying to miss the playoffs in order to get a new coach, I'd cut every one of them.

This team really misses Lubomir Visnovsky.

And be really, I mean really, really.

Well, if that's the case, hear me, members of the 08/09 Oilers. You are DONE. You have no chance. If you were in the WHL, you'd be losing to the Oil Kings right now. When you don't suck, you blow.

To fans of the current Oilers: you're welcome.

I 100% disagree. The pressure is getting to MacT and financial reality is going to set in soon enough as far as the bottom line goes. If he's not fired he'll quit or get moved around in the organization. You can see it in his eyes. It looks like he's had enough.
