    Super Bowl 2008

Patriots vs. Giants - Sunday Feb. 3

Here's my break-down of the game:

    Pats O vs. Giants D

The Giants have a very good d-line, but the Pats pass blocking O-line is much better. The Giants will have to blitz to put pressure on Brady, one of their main goals will be to hit Brady. I anticipate them taking a Roughing the Passer penalty at some point in the same, probably 2nd half. When the Giants blitz their LBs, they have success getting to Brady, but Welker will get the quick passes. When blitzing DBs, they will likely have limited success at the Pats TEs and RBs are good at recognizing this and picking it up. If they don't blitz, the Pats o-line should keep them in check, and that it when the Pats WRs should be able to take advantage of an aggressive defense and beat them over the top. I predict two long passes to either Moss or Stallworth. The Giants will try to shake Brady by getting hits on them, but Brady doesn;t get rattled easily, and I expect the that although the Pats will pass a lot, that the Giants d-line will get tired down the stretch of the game, and will get frustrated.

When running the ball, the Giants have an advantage between the tackles. If the Pats have success on the ground, it'll be from tosses or stretches. The Pats WRs are very good blockers, and I expect Maroney to spring one for 35+ yards if he gets to the second level. The X-Factor is Maroney, he is a good runner when he hits the line at full speed, but he has a tendency to shuffle his feet when he gets the ball and get tackled in the backfield. If this happens, I won't be surprised to see Evans get some carries in an attempt to establish a run game. Faulk is also someone to watch for, when he's in the game, the Pats are passing, and he's a good blocker but is also clutch on 3rd down in taking a short pass and getting a first down.

Ultimately, I expect over 45 passes from Brady, and for him to have his way with the Giants D. Welker with over 8 catches, all of them short except for one 20+ yarder. I expect Moss to have a big game, and for Stallworth to get involved in place of Gaffney. I think that the Pats O will have a big 2nd half as the Giants lose composure.

    Giants O vs. Pats D

The Pats LBs are good in the middle, and when they blitz. If the Giants run game is to have success, then they'll have to run to the outside. Jacobs is successful running to the outside, while I expect Bradshaw to get stuffed in the middle when he runs. Seau is hungry for a championship, and I expect him to have a big game. Screen passes probably won't work. Wilfork is the best DT in the game at playing and recognizing the screen. I think the Pats try to apply pressure early, and will have some success, but the Giants o-line will be able to hold their outside rushers such as Vrabel. Manning rushes throws and make bad decisions when he is pressured from the bad-side, but he can beat you when you blitz from the defensive-left side. Therefore, I think Belicheck will try to send Thomas at Eli, and could have some success since Seymour plays on that side as well.

Eli makes some bad decisions and has been bailed out by his receivers, and has a tendency to throw to short hook routes when under pressure. This plays into Samuels hands, as he likes to jump routes. I think Samuels gets at least one INT. However, I also expect Samuels to be beat over top while in zone coverage. In man coverage, Samuels on Toomer is a good match-up, and probably best to have Hobbs on Plaxico with Meriweather over top. I don't expect Kevin Boss to have much of an impact. I do expect the Giants to get a deep pass TD. Just like on the other side of the ball, I expect the Giants to lose composure late in the game, and for Eli to make mistakes when that happens.

One reason why the Giants kept the Week 17 so close was because of red-zone effeciency. They will need to continue this if they have chance of winning. I think Jacobs would the man to help them do this, Eli likes to look for him when down in that area, and therefore I think Bruschi will cover him, which is a good match-up for the Pats.

    Special Teams

Hixon did very well in giving the Giants good field position in their first game, and that was a major reason why they did so well. I can't see the Pats letting them do that twice....and Hobbs could be a non-factor in the Pats return game, but he has the potential to break one for a TD...unlikely in my mind though.

    Play-calling

The Giants will keep it simple. They will try to be efficient and slowly move the ball downfield, and hope that they can catch a breakdown in coverage to make a big play. They have gotten to where they are at because of being patient and waiting for other to make mistakes, and taking advantage of it when they do.

The Pats will try to set up big plays from the beginning. If it's not there, Brady will be patient and give it to Welker and Faulk all day, but I expect a trick play or two and for them to be able to throw it over top to Moss or Stallworth on a play that they have run a few times, but usually throw it to Welker underneath.

    Penalties

Rodney Harrison might get a few while agitating the Giants, but I think this will be a clean game until the 4th quarter when the Giants lose their composure.

    Overall Prediction

    Patriots-38
    Giants-21

-close at halftime, Pats win it in the 2nd half.

Something interesting to note is that the Pats have been heavy favourites in all 3 prior SB appearances but have only won by 3 points.

If Eli and the Giants offence play error-free ball control football, if the D can pressure Brady and limit the big plays to Stallworth/Moss/Welker and if the Giants special teams or defence can score at least once, then the Giants have a chance.
But it's just too much to hope for.

The way to beat a team that is so much better than you is to catch them sleeping. But with the Pats coaching and the experience they have on offence and defence, it's just not going to happen.

I think the Giants can cover the spread, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a 42-7 game either.

My prediction: Pats 31 Giants 23

Eli has been playing error free of late, and that's a big part of why the Giants are in the Super Bowl. I don't think this will carry through in the big game, Pats will score at least two TD's off turnovers.

        Prediction
        Pats 35 Giants 20

          some more analysis....

          Individual Match-ups

Moss vs. Madison - Moss's one weakness is his inability to break off a good jam. Madison is a physical corner who will jam hard at the line. Therefore, I expect to see Madison on Moss most of the game. Madison's weakness is when he plays off of the receiver, if you see Madison lined up 5-10 yards off of Moss, watch the Pats try and take advantage of that. However, when they go to that coverage, I think they will move Ross over on Moss, because he is much better in that regard. Ross is a very good young corner, he is one person that Brady should try and pick on. Madison will be physical early on to try and shake Moss, a penalty may result.

Strahan vs. Kaczur - Strahan has lost some speed, and will likely draw the attention of double teaming with Watson or Faulk. Therefore, I can't see him being a huge factor in the pass game, but he will show in the run game, the Pats should not run in Strahan's direction. Regardless of who they play, they don't have success running to the right. One thing to note, last time these two played, the Pats were without their RG and RT....and that's where most of the pressure came from.

Umenyiora vs. Light - an interesting match-up. Light did pretty well in the first game, but this could go either way and will be a battle worth paying attention to through-out the game.

Welker vs. ? - Welker will see a variety of different people covering him. If he gets matched up with a safety, then the Giants are blitzing and Welker will win that match-up. In zone defenses, he'll be up against Webster or LBs. He can win either match-up, but don't expect him to be venturing to the middle of the field too often.

Maroney vs. Pierce - Pierce will win this match-up, and therefore (along for other reasons stated) they'll run towards Torbor on the left side of the o-line. But I still think Pierce will be effective in shutting down the run game.

Samuel vs. Toomer - Toomer runs short routes and gets YAC. Samuels jumps those routes. Eli should stay away from this match-up.

Plaxico vs. Hobbs - Plaxico is hurt, but has been all season and has performed well. This is where the Giants will be able to get big plays. Don't be surprised to see Adalius, Rodney, or Meriweather try to get in his face early and take him off his game.

Diehl vs. Seymour/Thomas - I think the Pats will blitz on the back side a few times, and Diehl will be the one who will have to have a good game. Diehl isn't that good though, he's good, but not that good.

Wilfork vs. O'Hara - if the Pats want to blitz effectively, they'll have to win this match-up and force double teams on Wilfork all game. On the other hand, if the Giants don't give Wilfork proper recognition, then he'll be the backfield early and often, and Eli does not do very well when being blitzed straight up the middle, that's when he makes those real bonehead mistakes.

Jacobs vs. Bruschi/Seau - for his size, Jacobs isn't that good of a blocker. They'll run to the outside to counter this, but it's all about winning the battle at the line of scrimmage for both sides in this match-up.

The more important question, is where is everyone planning on watching the game?

Just thought I'd chime in here and mention that USA Today in yesterday's issue had 25 pages of Super Bowl coverage. That's not including ad pages. Guy today asked me who I was cheering for in the football game. I said I'm a fan of the greatest CFL franchise ever, the Edmonton Eskimos, and don't much care for NFL ball. He looked at me curiously. He was huge so I told him (nervously) that I'm cheering for anyone by New England. He shook my hand and called me his friend. Right answer!

I won't be watching. I'll be on a plane homeward bound.

I'll be watching at home with my wife.
One of my brothers was supposed to drop by for the game but apparantly he'd rather spend time with his wife and kids. What a maroon.

                        ??

The commercials get played again and again and again, and have their own TV shows just to show Super Bowl Ads, plus their own website so that you can view them AGAIN, just in case you were locked in a box for the entire weekend.

I wouldn't miss a second of the game for anything that wasn't life threatening.

I have a PVR now so it does not really matter. When I had my dish though they did not have that, and youtube wasn't around yet, so I missed them all. (BTW for anyone who does not have one spend the money on a PVR, you will not be sorry, just got mine a little while ago and do not know how I watched TV without it) I wound up watching them last year on the internet. Went on the computer during half time and after the game.

I have a pet peave about the Super Bowl that I must share...

...I am an NFL fan who watches 9 hours of NFL games per week. I watch the draft, I watch the combine, I follow stats, I play fantasy football, I watch Total Access, and I generally love football, and so many people here do.

The Super Bowl is the championship game, it's what every offseason move, every game, every play comes down to. It's the ultimate goal and the ultimate game.

But then, when the game comes so do the masses of people that dilute the game and turn it into just a party. People watch for commercials! People watch for the Half-Time show! Businesses come in and pay millions of dollars for a 30 second advertisement! It became a marketing dreamworld! Is it even about the game anymore?! Does anyone care that the biggest game of the year is being played?! Am I the only one who thinks that the whole world has gone mad?!

Does the outcome of the game even matter? Or do people just care that the game is on and people are watching it! I know that there are millions of people who really care about what happens, but it just kills me see that for every person who watches the game for the same love of the game that I have, that there are two other people who are just joining in the masses and going with the crowd.

Society has gone mad! It's all gone to hell!

                            WHY?!

                            WHY?!

                            so ya.....Patriots 38-21.

I've also wondered why they needed that extra week off before the Super Bowl. Is it for the media to swarm in with lame ass stories, pointless shows with die hard fan stories or for companies to get that last minute dime spent? I mean obviously it's a week to get prepared, rest, recover from any injuries but this is the only sport I can think off where they take time off before the big game. NHL, NBA, CFL all go straight through. Especially the NHL where you can go night after night for 2 months straight.
