What a disgrace. The only way this team will ever make the World Cup is if we host it, and fat chance we have of that with such a pathetic mess of a team. I think we'd be better off having the women's team play the men's matches.

Certainly a pathetic performance. Sadly I kinda figured it would end like this, either in Honduras or in the hex... not exactly a leap given our history. Hart is obviously out, and hopefully this will be disastrous enough to blow the CSA sky-high... but I doubt we're that lucky.

On the womens front there is some pretty scary news too... apparently the US is sniffing around Herdman. He's the first coach that's ever managed to make them look like a coherent team, rather than one good striker and ten others in like uniforms.

I won't comment on the game. It's not my thing.

But I did hear an interesting story about the stadium where they played. The crowd is supposed to be quite rowdy. Apparently it has barbed wire around the field, machine gun toting guards and a moat!

Yeah, they have it all around the field and the perimeter of the stadium. Welcome to soccer in Central America. Fortunately since the Canadians were buried so quickly at least they were spared the "piss bags" (though today they probably deserved them)... they almost make Rider fans look civilized. Almost.

The problem with the soccer team is "the Canadian Content" not the salary cap. I think ET needs to see reconsider his approach. As it clearly doesn't work.

Blow it up and quit letting the players run things. Start scheduling home games to make conditions as difficult as possible for the opposition (play warm-weather team in cold, play slow/grass-based team on turf, play in wind, rain...start scheduling civic holidays so that fans can party outside the visitors' hotel like the Panamanians did).

On my drive home from work I was listening to Mark Spector and Gregor debate about the mens team. Spec said the team hasn't improved what so ever. The last time they qualified for the world cup was 1986. Gregor felt that overall, the skill level has gotten better in Canada. They haven't been to the world cup since the 80's and they can't even get out of first round of qualifying. In an extremely important game they get destroyed by Hondurus 8-1. Considering most soccer games have scored of 2-1 or less. Getting beat 8-1 is like getting beat 20-1 in hockey. Hondurus isn't even a huge force in soccer and they are killing the Canadian mens team. They only beat the Cuban's 3-0 when 1/4 of the Cuban team defected so they had zero spares and I don't even know if they dressed a full team.

I don't know how the hell Gregor can actually believe the mens soccer program has improved.

The skill level has gotten better, I think, with improved and more dedicated training...just like it has in every other sport. But it's happened all round the world, and relative to the pack, the men's soccer team has clearly regressed.

There is absolutely no reason that Canada shouldn't consistently be in the top 3 in CONCACAF (behind Mexico and the US), yet we haven't even made the top 6 since the 90's. We should have easily finished in the top 2 in this group (we always have problems with Honduras, even though we shouldn't, but Panama and Cuba? Come on!) During that time, talented players have come and gone without taking advantage of what they had to offer. This starts and ends at the top. The CSA has been one been one big cluster@#$% for the past few decades, and the results are the field are prime examples of that. An 8-1 loss it the most meaningful game the team has played in 4 years should be a huge wake-up call to blow the entire program up and start from scratch, but hardly anyone will notice or care because the NHL proposed a new deal that could salvage part of the season, and that story buries the embarrassing joke of a men's national soccer program to the back of the sports section.

Such a lack of effort on display.

Honduras did it proper though scheduling a game during the heat of the day in that insane stadium. Can't imagine walking through a tunnel to the field where the opposition fans can literally stand above you on the bars.
