Quinton Porter Released...

Might be a good pick up. He's had flashes of brilliance, but I suspect he's never really had a system that he can fit into. Plus he's another example of someone that's been on a roller coaster of QB controversies. He's been in Hammie since 08 and has started I think about 10 games with moderate success. Considering the tools he had to work with. (and if you don't count his first start where he got sacked a dozen times by the Lions...)

I'd take a flyer on him, BUT there is one issue. We have Jyles, Joseph, Masoli and Nichols all coming to camp right now, add Porter and thats 5. A positive is we are serious in finding the best qb for the job. A real negative is that with 5 arms in camp, thats less reps to go around to each, and less time to build chemistry with the offense.

If and I stress IF we do the right thing and punt Jyles/Joseph it would make sense to bring in Quinton. That's what I would do. I would rather catch passes from Porter than Jyles any day...if I remember right it was more a matter of his receivers not getting out of coverage more than him over throwing the target.

Well it seems no matter what Joesph is on the team until he decides to hang them up. That said I would rather keep Nichols, Masoli and random rookie and KJ than Porter. if Nichols is still not healthy and Masoli shows zero progression then we could do worse then Porter.

I'd rather see Porter than Jyles of Joseph in camp... not exactly a ringing endorsement, but I actually wouldn't mind giving him a look.

Porter was set to be a free agent, Hamilton let him go early. With all the potential free agents, I'd not seen any discussion on any football boards about any teams having interest in Porter. I think he's slightly ahead of Jyles as far as ability goes.

I like the idea of taking a flyer on him and he is a better choice for a #2 or 3 QB than Joseph or Jyles.

Guys like Porter and McPherson who have been around forever as backups are not starter material. If they were starter material, they'd be starting.

Agreed. I'd rather have Porter here than Jyles and Joseph. Being 30 this December works against Porter though. I just hope that his release doesn't mean that the Tabbies have an interest in Reilly. I still believe Reilly is our best option. With the success of RG 3, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick south of the border this year maybe Reilly will get more NFL interest than we think as teams there look at more mobile QB's.
