Yup...and that's sad to think about.
I would rather have a raw rookie than Porter. He is meh and we already have meh.

He has all the appeal of a Bart Hendricks.

I still would rather have him than Jyles/Joseph. Maybe there's a reason he's been a back up for five years but who knows? Stranger things have happened. You gotta think back to Ray...how long was he going to be the back up to Jason? Injury put him in the game and the rest is history. Porter's never really been THE starter so to speak so he's never had that chance.

On another note...it's kinda sad that a five year back up is considered by quite a few to be an improvement over what we had at #1 & #2 last season isn't it?

Hamilton has also had a history of late of being where QB careers go to die... can't be an easy place to break in
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

I'd rather have a corpse in camp than see Joseph or Jyles in green and gold again.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

I would not throw McPherson in with Porter in terms of back ups not being starter material. The reason is simple, the retirement watch on AC has been on every year for awhile so McPherson has been just waiting for him to actually pull the trigger. Porter has had his chance, all be it limited, to start and Hamilton keeps bringing in guys. That is what makes me worry a little about him. Remember also that AC spent some time in Hamilton early in his carear and we see how that has turned out.

If the Esks do the smart thing then Joseph and Jyles should be gone so that opens up 2 spots at camp. Bring in a couple of free agents (Porter would not be a terrible signing for one of them and he would come fairly cheap) to compete against Nichols for the starter job and keep one in the end (as either the starter or the back up) and release the other.

I think Porter will hang it up. He's an investment brocker in Boston. I can't see him any team offering him serious money. Would have liked to see what he could have done with a QB coach like Trestman or Chapdelaine. He's a bit of an enigma. Sometimes he's a pure pocket passer some other games he will run like a deer.

Mcpherson would not have gotten two extensions and stayed in Montreal for five years if he wasn't any good.

If he was any good he would have left the Als and gone to try and start with another team. Guaranteed wages with no wear and tear on the body. A good gig if you can get it.

Talented backups who have what it takes find a way to become starters. Lulay, Tate, Ray, whoever...if they are starter material, it happens. Either with their current team or a different one. Players like McPherson and Porter I want no part of.

I want our front office turning over every rock (within reason) in coming up with a starting QB. As long as it's worth the effort why not take a look at a guy like Porter...maybe he just needs to be in the right situation...look at a guy like Wilkie who made the esks on his way home after being cut by the BC lions...you never know who may stick...for the record I don't believe Porter is the anwser either but I want our GM working hard and taking a serious look at guys like that and putting in the effort to make good decisions on whether or not he deserves a look see or should be eliminated from the conversation...don't eliminate anyone out of hand.

                          Re: Quinton Porter Released...

There is something to be said about having a backup with CFL backup with experience who can win a game on his own. Jyles and Joseph don't fit that bill and Porter could fit that bill of someone who can come in short-term and win a game...

Career back up I understand, but given the fact that Montreal has never really brought in anyone else to compete against MacPherson says something. They have been great at finding talent, so I have a hard time thinking that if they did not think that he could do the job they would not hesitate to bring in someone else.

Porter was handed the reins full go a couple years ago and the second stringer came in and took over. Consider that the #2 guy was Kevin Glenn and he was considered an upgrade. Then the Ticats dump Glenn and bring in an over the hill Henry Burris rather than go with Porter. What does that tell you?
