Changes Will Be Substantial - Tillman

From today's Edmonton Journal. I thought all of the Ricky Ray "detractors" here might be particularly interested. Frankly, it's refreshing to FINALLY see someone in the Eskimo organization call it like it is and to say publicly what many of us have known for some time:

Changes Will Be Substantial - Tillman

Esks GM promises 2011 roster will have much different look

As the losses and the lost seasons have piled up for the Edmonton Eskimos, the diehards have agitated for everything from a radical housecleaning to more surgical corrections, and every remedy in between.

For the extremists among the faithful, general manager Eric Tillman has some welcome news about the makeup of the club that went 7-11, but whose late-season surge left it one victory shy of a playoff berth in the CFL West Division.

"The (roster) changes will be substantial," Tillman said Saturday. "But that doesn't alter the expectations.

"If our goal is anything less than winning the Grey Cup next year, then we're cheating ourselves and our fans. Goals are high."

With ex-GM Danny Maciocia gone (fired on July 31) and head coach Richie Hall dismissed this week, another man with a target on his back, to some hard cases, at least, would be veteran quarterback Ricky Ray.

Tillman had some thoughts on Ray, also, but not necessarily ones that would soften the hard hearts of those who reflexively blame the quarterback for everything from dropped balls by receivers to an insipid halftime show.

Maciocia, Hall, Strasser, Hairston and Thorpe are finally all gone. The rest will take care of itself.

Good luck Kavis Reed and the rest of the Esks' new coaching staff!

I'm a Tillman detractor and I agree with everything he said in that article. Never had a doubt that he knows what he's talking about. That's refreshing after five years of apparent cluelessness.

Doesn't stop me from being a detractor, since the reasons for that are different. But at least there are some neurons firing upstairs.
Out of my mind; back in five minutes.

Great article. My guess with Ray is he signs a 2 year extension, worth about 500K.

God.... I love Tillman's idea of what he wants here. What a refreshing change from the past 5 years.

Nobody except for hopeful Saskatchewan fans who were hoping and praying for Ray to be released/traded probably ever had any doubt that he wouldn't remain an Esk. I think next year we'll see why he and AC are still the class of the CFL along with Hank. With DD far, far in the rear view mirror, I may add.

I could see a two-year deal being as high as $600K, or $300K per year. That would still be a 33.3% pay cut on his reported $450K annual salary, which is a very, very significant pay cut. Tillman and the Esks organization could probably live with that.

Dislike Tillman on the human aspect all you want, but you can't deny he does know football. That or it just looks like he really does because we've been subjected to pure **** from above with DM

Some of both, methinks. But, I agree, there is no doubt Tillman knows his stuff.

Good article - thanks for posting! Very much a ton of promises that we as Esks fans seem to get every year. The difference here is, I think Tillman will be more successful in delivering on his promises than the previous regime. It's sure to be a busy busy winter in the Eskimo offices!

There should be lots to talk about on the boards this off season - that's for sure!

Re: Changes Will Be Substantial - Tillman

I have to say FINALLY the GM of the Esks recognizes what I have and many of us have said, the Esks severely lack play makers in the receiving core. They got Stamps and that is it. For the last 3 seasons, the Esks receiving core was been the worst I have watched in a long time. Think about when they last won the G-Cup. There was Tucker, Hervey, Mookie, I think Stamps was there but he was the 4th or 5th guy. They had Mookie the possession guy, Hervey the play making speed guy and Tucker the go to guy.
This year, last year, there was Stamps and no one.
It doesn't matter who plays QB, until they upgrade the receiving core, their offense will struggle.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

Definitely, and it sounds like Tillman has a couple of "speed" guys in mind. It also looks like it's bye-bye time for Kelly Campbell. Outside of Stamps and a couple of the Canadian receivers, I wouldn't count on any of them being back.

Agree with everything except for one correction -- Fred Stamps joined Esks as free agent in 2007.
