    Curran fined

Surprised there hasn't been a thread on this yet.

TORONTO -- The Canadian Football League announced today that it has fined Edmonton Eskimo linebacker Rennie Curran for a dangerous hit to the head of Winnipeg Blue Bombers receiver Terrence Edwards during last Friday night's game.

On the play, it was determined Curran lowered his head and led with the top of his helmet. It was also determined that Curran's helmet was the primary and initial point of contact to the helmet of his opponent.

This type of play is dangerous to both players.

As per league policy, the amounts of the fines are not disclosed.

The league looks to finally be showing some consistency in regards to policing these head shots. Better late than never.

Hopefully Curran learns from this one and doesn't let it happen again.
Keep an open mind, and you never know who might walk in...

    RIP Pizmo

It was about as clear a spear as you'll ever see, and hit the guy in the head to boot... definitely not the type of hit you want to be seeing out there.
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

I've said for years now, that my biggest fear is seeing another James Bell type incident.

Unlike some fans who would jump to pay the bill, or rail against the league...I applaud this. Especially because its my team, and I don't want to see Renny hurt. I hope it does have an influence, without taking away his edge.

This and the flagrant pilling-on that happens in every game should be severely dealt with.

                  Speak for yourself.

I hate this stuff, it's football, it's supposed to be violent.

Yeah, talk to me when you see a guy paralyzed and the rest of his life changed forever making a play.

I get that there is inherent risks involved with playing the game, and these guys know it going in...but frankly, this can be minimized, and should be as much as possible within the framework of the game.

I get that, it just feels awkward to tell a guy to go against his basic instincts. I mean, I can't imagine when I was playing trying to make a conscious decision to change the way I tackle in the the heat of the moment when all that's going through your head is "crush him!" lol.

On one hand you want to avoid unnecessary injuries especially ones with serious life changing implications, but at the same time, you don't want guys slowing up, over analyzing, and doing things they wouldn't normally do just to try and avoid a fine. Football is a collision sport and that's part of what makes it great. You've just gotta be careful when you start trying to change things like that.

When I was learning to tackle I was taught use your shoulder not your helmet and wrap up with Both arms. I cannot understand Pro's who do not follow these simple fundamentals of tackling. Don't go for the huge hit make sure they don't make yards after the catch etc.

Run the Ball up the gut around the horn it does not matter. We run we win what is so difficult to understand.

Defiantly, that's tackling fundamentals, but some time you just have to flat out level a guy.

The only time I ever went for a big hit was when the WR I was covering left himself open and I wanted to jar loose the ball. Our coach at Grant Park stressed solid fundamental defense, Sure tackles, and Go for the Interceptions only if you have backup over the top.

While our team was not super talented we were able to win the city championships with fundamental football.

Our QB was not accurate beyond 20-25 yards but could run. Our Rbs was one 16 yr old monster at about 225 and an 18 yr old about 180 we ran from the strong I and our offense was generally 30 to 40% pass 60 to 70% run.

We ate up the clock probably having the ball 35-40 minutes per game and usually taking 10+ play scoring drives.

This in my opinion is smash mouth football unfortunately no team plays like this anymore.
