    2011 vs 2014 through 5 games

Was thinking back to the last time I was this excited about the start to the Eskimo season and decided to do a comparison from that 2011 season to this 2014 season. that year we started 5-0 then went 6-7 for the rest of the year. I want to say that this team has a different feel to it then that team but I find myself saying "lets wait and see how they rebound from this adversity" which was something the 2011 team didn't do real well. So here is what I came up with:

    2011 (5-0) 152 points for 99 against, or 30.6 to 19.8 average per game
    2014 (4-1) 134 points for 80 against, or 26.8 to 16 average per game

I remember our defence carrying us a bit that year to start the year, even scoring their share or point IIRC, through 5 games in 2011 we had 8 INT's for and 2 against +6, where as this year we have 9 for and 4 against for a +5.

while you can't tell a bunch with these stats one thing we should remember is how quickly things can turn around.

Similar to why I'm more excited about finding a franchise Qb and the change in culture as the wins.

I'm actually a bit nervous about the comparison to 2012. That season our defense was simply a wall in the early part of the season. When QB's J**** and J***** were unable to get the ball out of a telephone box, the defense started to wear down and eventually collapsed under the weight of injuries from prolonged field time. I have more faith in Reilly and our offense, but they are not yet in sync. That's got to start happening to take the pressure off the defense.
Out of my mind; back in five minutes.

Right it was 2012 where our D was scoring a bunch of points

The issue in 2011, was during Win #5, the whole team started going down with injuries (especially the O-Line). So I feel much better this year because our offensive line has been solid. And outside of Howard, we really haven't had any significant injuries. We're due for a better health year. Hopefully it continues.

Actually we've had 2 Dline injuries this year with Donny O and Howard..... It's funny how injuries always seem to pile up in the same position

I'm with you in that I feel better about this team than the 2011 edition. Whether that is just optimism will be determined as the season progresses. I think Reed got a lot out of his team based on emotion ( aka "the Eskimo Way" ) more than on developing skills and designing plays like Jones appears to be doing with this team. Talent with Hervey in charge is improving. He has a plan on how to improve the team and is bringing in players who fit the plan. We have a huge improvement and more upside in quarterbacking than what we had in J & J. Perhaps best of all is that we don't have an egomaniac in charge who seemed determined to run the franchise into the ground.

The teams are quite a bit worse this year than in previous years, so I'm not as worried. The best team right now is likely the Stamps and even they aren't that great.

2011 was our last year with Ricky Ray, so one could argue that he was masking some of the warts we had.

Might be a reflection of the addition of the extra team, which waters down especially Canadian talent. Some commentator made the point that the lack of Canadian talent affects offenses more than defenses, which might help explain why scoring is down this year.

Just for laughs I've complied the same stats for the 2012 season which end up looking like this:

2012 (3-2) 111 points for 79 against or 22.2 to 15.8 average. We also had 7 INT's for and 4 against over that period.

What I would like to compare but can't seem to find is the time of possession over that same time frame as our Defence hit that wall that year ending with an average of 25 points per game by the end of the year or 28.5 points per game over the final 13 games.

The difference IMO between this years team and the 2011 team was I remember watching most of the Esks games in 2011 with my hands over my eyes. I remember teams systematically driving on the Esks defense with relative ease, over and over and over again but a big play like a pick 6 or a fumble would stop them. The Esks defense early on in 2011 was good at hold the other team to field goals. I don't ever remember the Esks winning the time of possession game. I remember chaos on the sidelines. In 2011, I always felt that it was only a matter of time before the opposition wore the defense down enough and they would start scoring. I think the 6-7 record speaks to that.

This year the Esks seem more in control. They aren't relying on the big play to stop teams, teams just don't get any offense. Teams aren't methodically driving the field again and again only to settle for a field goal like in 2011. This year, teams aren't going anywhere. They aren't relying on the defense to score. Even in the Stamps loss, the Stamps did NOTHING. Their starter had 124 yards of passing. How often so you see a team win in the CFL with 124 yards passing? The Stamps 1st 10 points were directly on a fumbled punt and a blocked punt. So there's 10 points gifted with the Stamps offense doing nothing to earn them. If the special teams doesn't fumble the ball and picks up 1 block, erase 10 points off the board. Then another TD is because of an ill timed 3rd gamble. There's another 7 points.

SO overall, I think the Esks are playing much better team ball.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

TOP was a major issue that year. We're leading the league in it this year (or at least we were last time I saw it on TSN's broadcast... the CFL can't bother itself to post something so simple).
"This year, we did what we were supposed to do. We fought as a team. We fought as a team. And the fact is, we gotta go back and go to work, to make sure we finish this next time. That's all we gotta do. This right here makes us stronger. Let's understand who we are as a team. Let's understand this right here makes us stronger." - Ray Lewis, January, 2012.

I'm still trying to find the number of first downs by each team per game. The CFL game stats does not show that info.
