Per sources, #Riders WR Maurice Price has filed his retirement papers with the league office and doesn’t plan on playing in 2016. #CFL

I’m told #Riders have no way of recouping the signing bonus they gave Price in January. #CFL

Price collects signing bonus ..Then retires. That's the = to #CFL teams releasing players before bonus payment is due.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG that's one of the best things I've read in a long time....serves any team right for signing a piece of s*** like that but the fact who is happened to is the best part. Can't.....stop....laughing.....
Ok CFL Cap affecianados, does that bonus money count against their SMS for 2016?

        Love it.
The bonus money WILL count towards this year's SMS since it was paid in January.

Dirty pool for sure... but with the structure of contracts so stilted to the teams favor and after the way the Als hosed Muamba, I'd say this is just deserts for the CFL
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

The whole concept of the bonus is a screwed up system in the CFL. 99 times out of 100 it's the player getting screwed by the team, so I was wondering why players would agree to it a bonus structure in their contract at all, but this is one example of someone screwing the team back. Good for him.

If it was any other team other than the Riders, I'd feel bad. But it's the Riders so I couldn't be happier that it happened to them.
Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.

Re: Mo Price collects bonus then retires

Seems fair. Teams take advantage of the loop hole on paying bonus', only fair to see a player return the favor. The fact it's happening to a team that appear to have made a record-number of cuts (unverified) to contracted players in a single off-season, it even seems fair that it happens to them. That's not to say I don't understand the need for the cuts to reshape the team, but I imagine a lot of players are pretty sour about how it has gone down.

Didn't they even trade for Price initially then sign him to a new contract? And a quick check... Yes indeed!

Saskatchewan will send its sixth round pick (45th overall) and a seventh round pick (54th overall) in the 2016 CFL Draft to Ottawa for Price and the Redblacks sixth round selection (52nd overall).
Just a 7th round pick but with their sad Canadian depth even a 7th rounder would have been nice to have.

For a US based player, I understand it has a lot to do with tax implications. Tax on a signing bonus is significantly less than his salary tax. Probably a big reason why Mike Reilly had such a big signing bonus this year. Less cost for the team, more take home pay for the player. In this case, I'm guessing the signing bonus wasn't that huge, but I'd be curious to know what it really was.
Hope, at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are
