Around the CFL 2023

Last year Toronto, Hamilton, Saskatchewan & Ottawa hosted games on Canada Day weekend. Toronto's attendance dropped 2692 from their season opener. Hamilton's dropped 2478, Ottawa's 2053 and Saskatchewan's dropped 499. For Toronto and Hamilton their Canada Day weekend games were their smallest crowds of the season. For Ottawa it was their 2nd smalled crowd in their first 6 home games after which things really tailed off as was inevitable for a team that had little to no playoff prospects. As the REDBLACKS closed out 2022 they had lost their last 12 home games and 23 out of 25 going back to the end of the 2018 season. Saskatchewan was the exception. Their CDW crowd was their 4th biggest in 2022 a year where their overall average gate was the Riders' lowest since 2006.

Interesting I guess most people do get out of town and do outdoorsy stuff.

Could it be that the goal should be Canada Day games played in the Western cities instead of Eastern?

I'm not much for celebrating Canada Day or any other such things. However I was out in Ottawa last year to take in the REDBLACKS game vs BC. Wisely it was played on the 30th which was the Friday. I think that was a good thing as the city was totally wrapped up in Canada Day the next day. I think the attendance drop would have been even worse had they been scheduled for July 1.

I think many cities like to do some sort of Canada Day celebration. Lots of folks would much rather get involved in the party than go to a sporting event. And those who don't want to get involved in the party look at it as a good reason to get the hell out of Dodge.

Some peeps and I where talking about how TSN hates edmonton - and one mentioned our game Friday - first of the Canada Day weekend had ZERO pregame I didnt think anything of it till today... I just watched the PREGAME for the Winnipeg/Montreal game.... Remind me why there was no pregame yesterday ?

Some peeps and I where talking about how TSN hates edmonton - and one mentioned our game Friday - first of the Canada Day weekend had ZERO pregame I didnt think anything of it till today... I just watched the PREGAME for the Winnipeg/Montreal game.... Remind me why there was no pregame yesterday ?

Mmmm, maybe because both teams suck. If this was the Ricky Ray era, there would have been a big pre-game with Big Chis Shultz singing the praises. But this team is ****ing terrible. Ottawa is marginally better with Masoli coming back soon. It has nothing to do with media bias. No one would promote this garbage.

You could be onto something. In a pre-game show the broadcaster would like to promote the game as being something the viewers should want to spend the following 3 hours watching. With the way things have been going for both clubs since Covid there's no way the pre-game show could spin the game pretty. If they wanted to talk honestly about the two teams they'd provide more reasons for the viewers to switch to the Jays game or maybe a Slap-Chop infomercial. No pre-game show may have done their game ratings a favour.

Put a solid Package together and try to get Chris Bertoia out of U of W. He took their program from complete Doggy Doo and turned it completely around. He believes in Both Lines first and foremost.

I don't think there's been pre-game for any Friday night games this year. Could be mistaken.

I'd agree. From what I'm gathering they seem to be stepping away from promoting Friday night football as the major game of the weekend and are prioritizing others. I may be wrong, just the sense I've gotten when watching Friday games this year.

Thank god I missed this weekend's Friday broadcast. Was much happier driving working on trailer set up. Listening to the first half on Ched was funny as Scott and Campbell seem even more dejected than us. There was no positivity coming from their mouths whatsoever.

I wouldn't have blamed them if they had a few drinks while on the air... it would have probably gotten more entertaining.. lol
